19 Betsabé fue a ver al rey Salomón para interceder en favor de Adonías. El rey se puso de pie para recibirla y se inclinó ante ella; luego se sentó en su trono y mandó que pusieran otro trono para su madre; y ella se sentó a la derecha del rey.

20 —Quiero pedirte un pequeño favor —dijo ella—. Te ruego que no me lo niegues.—Dime de qué se trata, madre mía. A ti no puedo negarte nada.

21 Ella continuó:—Concédele a tu hermano Adonías casarse con Abisag la sunamita.

22 —Pero ¿cómo puedes pedirme semejante cosa? —respondió el rey a su madre—. Es mi hermano mayor, y cuenta con el apoyo del sacerdote Abiatar y de Joab hijo de Sarvia. ¡Realmente me estás pidiendo que le ceda el trono!

23 Dicho esto, el rey Salomón juró por el SEÑOR: «¡Que Dios me castigue sin piedad si no hago que Adonías pague con su vida por esa petición!

24 El SEÑOR me ha establecido firmemente en el trono de mi padre, y conforme a su promesa me ha dado una dinastía. Por tanto, tan cierto como que él vive, ¡juro que hoy mismo Adonías morirá!»

25 En seguida, el rey Salomón le dio a Benaías hijo de Joyadá la orden de matar a Adonías.

INTRODUCTION TO FIRST KING 2

This chapter gives an account of the charge David gave to his son Solomon, a little before his death, to walk in the ways of the Lord, 1Ki 2:1-4; and of some instructions delivered to him concerning some particular persons he should either show favour to, or execute justice on, 1Ki 2:5-9; and the next account in it is concerning his death and burial, and the years of his reign, 1Ki 2:10,11; after which it relates an address of Bathsheba to Solomon in favour of Adonijah, which was refused, and the issue of it was his death, 1Ki 2:12-25; and the deposition of Abiathar from the priesthood, 1Ki 2:26,27; and the putting of Joab to death for his treason and murders, 1Ki 2:28-34; in whose post Benaiah was put, as Zadok was in the place of Abiathar, 1Ki 2:35; and lastly the confinement of Shimei in Jerusalem, who had cursed David, 1Ki 2:36-38; who upon transgressing the orders given him was put to death, 1Ki 2:39-46.
